Was Mr. Deeds responsible for a 23% decline in donations to the United Negro College Fund?
Main Post:
I was watching the film Mr. Deeds the other day. The part came along where he donates his $40 billion inheritance to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). As an accountant it made me curious to how much money is donated annually to the UNCF, so I did some digging.
Below is a breakdown of the annual contributions by year. I started in 2002 when both the movie Mr. Deeds was released and the Form 990 tax filings are available and ran through 2008 when the recession began.
- 2002 - $168,474,806
- 2003 - $129,818,384
- 2004 - $153,865,177
- 2005 - $169,408,629
- 2006 - $160,879,366
- 2007 - $162,008,049
- 2008 - $146,213,246
I was surprised to see such a large drop off in 2003 equating to 23% of 2002's donations.
At first I thought 2002 must've been a fluke of a year. Unfortunately I cannot find any tax filings before 2002 but this historical breakdown suggests they received substantial contributions leading up to 2002. The 2002 filing year also includes the period in which 9/11 occurred and a new scholarship was made for families affected by the tragedy. I thought this may have a caused a large uptick in donations but imagine there were more organizations than ever to donate to around this time. I imagine the UNCF was not being the only organization to aid 9/11 victims and their families. The longtime serving president and CEO William H. Gray III also stepped down in 2004. It can be inferred that this was due to poor performance in 2003.
These facts lead me to believe 2002 was not a year out of the norm for the UNCF. So what would cause March 2002 to March 2003 to take such a large dip. Could it be due to Mr. Deeds?
Studies show that people are less likely to donate when they don't think an organization needs the money. The fictional $40 billion received by the UNCF could have put in some peoples minds that the UNCF doesn't need the funds. It may have taken some time for people to finally realize a fake $40 billion isn't helpful and that's why we see incremental increase over the years after the film's release.
The real kicker of all this is in the form of a spoiler. Emilio ends up being the rightful heir and the $40 billion given to the UNCF by Deeds was not his to give. So presumably the organization doesn't get the money in real life or the movie.
tl;dr: The year Mr. Deeds came out donations to the United Negro College Fund went down 23%. There is almost no evidence this has to do with the $40 billion they received in the movie.
Top Comment: There is no conclusion to be drawn except for the fact that Mr Deeds has a direct and irrefutably profound effect on US domestic economic policy and grassroots fundraising at the local and national level.

Mr. Dave suggests 4 diversification In Mutual fund investment. Need a bit more help on this.
Main Post:
I understand that he suggests 4 divisions (Growth, growth income, aggressive growth, international).
So for example, if I have $10,000, he’s suggesting that we put 2500 in each of these mutual funds. Am I correct?
If so, does he suggest how we can identify which mutual fund to invest in within each categories? How do we go about learning which one is doing well? I know that the low expense ratio is one of the strong indicators but I want to know more how to identify a good mutual fund.
Thanks!

First question: yeah Dave would say to split it up evenly among the four funds.
Second question: the Wiki for this sub has identified specific mutual funds that fit each category. Look in there (I'm on a mobile device and am unable to paste the exact link at the moment).
Dave prefers funds which are actively managed, which try to beat the market. Others prefer passive investments, which will match the market. It is a point of major contention, even among the community here. Personally, I felt the fees of actively managed accounts were not worth it, and am switching my investments over to passive funds, which match the S&P 500, and have really low fees. We'd all agree though, that whichever route you go, the more you invest, the better. So don't let this argument scare you off, and hit BS4 with authority.
edit: This is the part of the Wiki I was talking about. Scroll down a little, and it has specific mutual funds, which fit each of Dave's 4 categories.
Please help Mr.Kitty's Emergency Vet Fund
Main Post:
Hi there!
Mr.Kitty has suffered from some severe neighbor abuse 😢 He has begun his road to recovery, and is doing much better. However, we have spent every penny we had to stablize him, and without more funds we will have to discontinue care. Without continued vet care he will NOT recover.
My request is that you lovely people SHARE SHARE SHARE my go fund me for Mr.Kitty. The more people who see this the better the chance is that we can save his life. If you are able to donate anything, even a small amount it will be greatly appreciated!! Mr.Kitty is my best friend, and I don't want to loose him due to not having money.
P.S. I do not qualify for anymore credit, and I am currently looking into low income grants for his vet care. If you have other advice it is more than welcome. Thank you!!
Below is a link to my go fund me with his full story and pictures.

Using HELOC as an emergency fund?
Main Post:
does anyone here uses HELOC as an emergency fund. what are your thoughts? I was looking into that option after reading an Mr Money Mustache article about it.

I think it's a horrible idea. If you fail to pay back the loan you lose your home, so an extended period of instability can lead to homelessness. You'll also have to dig yourself out of debt when things stabilize.
